Located in Satna District in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Maihar is a pilgrim city regarded as a holy ground that houses the temple of Maihar Devi. The temple is located on the Trikuta Hill and is devoted to Goddess Sharda, an incarnation of Sati. The city gets its name as Maihar from the belief that when Lord Shiva was carrying the dead body of Mother Goddess Sati—Known as Mai in the locality, her necklace had fallen on the grounds of this city. Given the fact that necklace is known as Haar in the local language here, the city came to be known as Mai + Haar; that is Maihar.
The devotion of the people for Maa Sharda goes back to an era as the 1170- CE, when the Alha and Udai warriors were fighting Prithvi Raj Chauhan. The two were very dedicated followers of Goddess Sharda and the first ones to visit her in the remote forest. The would regard her by the name of Sharda Mai and that is the reason the goddess came to be known as Mata Sharda Mai among the masses.
The main spots of pilgrim and tourist attraction in the place are: Maa Sharda Devi Temple, Golamath Temple, Oila Temple, Badi Maai Temple, Bada Akhada Temple, and many more.
