National Science Day

In India, the date of 28th February marks the celebration of National Science Day all across the country. The reason this date was chosen is the fact that in the year 1930, on this exact date, popular Indian physicist Sir Chandrashekhara Venkata Raman, popularly known as simply C.V. Raman, had discovered the Raman Effect, for which he was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, the same year in 1930. Hence, since then, National Science Day was coined by the government to celebrate science and technology, and also boost the morale and encourage young minds to come up with more scientific discoveries. In other words, National Science Day in India is a popular science festival, wherein huge number of students from schools and colleges all across India demonstrate a list of science projects, both at state and national levels, which is also followed by trending radio talks, seminars, science exhibitions, TV talks, public speeches on the same, etc. Other than these, the celebrations also include research discussions and demonstrations, lectures, science model examinations, debates, science quizzes, among many other activities.

The prime objective of the day is to raise awareness of the importance and implications of science in our everyday life, and how the same can help in boosting the welfare of the country. It is also a mode of opportunity for young scientific minds to bring forth their scientific research and discoveries and strive to get better at it, to contribute to the development of the society.

Each year, a new theme is adopted to celebrate National Science Day in the country. For instance, the theme of the day in the year 1999 was ‘’Our Changing Earth’’ which was followed by ‘’Recreating Interest in Basic Science’’ in the year 2000, ‘’Information Technology for Science Education’’ in 2001, ‘’Wealth From Waste’’ in 2002, so on and so forth. The themes in the last two years were, ‘’Science for Nation Building’’ in 2015, ‘’Scientific Issues for Development of the Nation’’ in 2016, and for this year in 2017, the theme is ‘’Science and Technology for Specially Abled Persons.’’
