On the 5th of June, every year, World Environment Day is celebrated. It is a day that is observed globally and began as an initiative by the United Nations to have a widespread awareness of how we should be protecting our environment and the various ways we can contribute towards its conservation. The first time it was observed was the year 1974, and since then, it has been an important campaign under the umbrella of the United Nations to raise immediate awareness of the masses on a list of environmental issues that demand deep concern, such as, global warming, climate change, marine pollution, degradation of the green and wildlife, and how our sustainable development is being threatened. As on today, over 143 countries observe World Environment Day and are a part of this initiative by the United Nations, and governments, NGOs, prominent conglomerates, corporate bodies, celebrities, as well as communities come together to increase awareness of the environmental issues. Each year, the World Environment Day is celebrated with a different theme. The theme for this year, 2017, is ‘’Connecting People to Nature—in the city and on the land, from the poles to the equator.
Every year along with a new theme, there is a new host country for the celebration of World Environment Day, and this year in 2017, the host country is Canada. Last year, it was the country of Angola that was the host for the World Environment Day with the theme ‘’Prohibit Illegal Trade of Threatened.’’
It was the year 2011, when India was the host country for this day, and the global event was held in the capital city of New Delhi in India with the theme being ‘’Forests: Nature at your Service.’’
In fact, the World Environment Day Anthem was penned down by Indian poet, Abhay K, and it was launched in the year 2013 on the occasion of the World Environment Day itself on the 5th of June, by former Union Ministers Kapil Sibal and Shashi Tharoor.
