World Smile Day
This year, the World Smile Day would be observer on the 6th of October. Every year this day is observed on the first Friday in the month of October. Last year the date was 7th of October and this year it’s the 6th. It was Harvey Ball, who was a commercial artist from Massachusetts who coined the concept of a World Smile Day, by creating the world’s first Smiley Face in the year 1963. And the first time that the World Smile Day was held was in the year 1999, and ever since then it has been annually observed in the month of October all over the world.
Harvey Ball passed away in the year 2001 and that very year, in his honour, the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation was established to commemorate his memory and name. The organisation has the slogan: Inproving this world, one smile at a time. It is the Harvey Ball World Smile Organization, which consecutively acts as the official sponsor of the World Smile Day every year.
In their own words, the organization’s objective is to make as many people as possible aware of World Smile Day through various mediums like the web, social media websites and apps, and to help encourage people to smile more and more and spread it everywhere alongside acts of kindness all across the globe.
Primarily, the day is observed every year with a lot of positivity and enthusiasm, in Worcester, Massachusetts, which was the birthplace of Harvey Ball. The place celebrates World Smile Day with a hot air balloon and lots of sidewalk chalk activities, and not to forget: the world’s largest human smiley face. On the other hand, in rest of the parts of the world, the day is observed with activities that encourage a smile in return, be it through distributing meals, making videos, and cracking jokes.
So, this World Smile Day, don’t forget to smile and spread smiles all around you!
