World Teachers Day

Also known as International Teachers Day, World Teachers Day is observed every year on the 5th of October worldwide. It was observed for the first time in the year 1994. This is not to be confused with the Teachers Day celebrated in India on the 5th of September every year, which is also the birth anniversary of Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. The objective of the World Teachers Day is to commemorate all the teacher organizations in the world, to empower all teachers, and to ensure that every academic and educational requirement of the present generation and the generation to come in the future is well fulfilled by the teachers all across the globe.

As per UNESCO, teachers everywhere deserve a recognition and appreciation alongside understanding for the immense contribution they make in the society and its development. The World Teachers Day is primarily an initiative by the Education International and as on today is observed in over 100 countries, and has around 401 member organizations.  Educational International recognizes the out and out contribution that the teaching profession makes in shaping up this society and thus, every year follows a public campaign on the 5th of October to recognize and commemorate the efforts and contributions of all those people who are in the teaching profession.

Every year, a new unique theme is followed for the World Teachers Day and this year in 2017, the theme is ‘Teaching in Freedom, Empowering Teachers.’ According to a statement by UNESCO, the prime reason for this year’s theme to revolve around empowering teachers is the simple fact that the United Nations has adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal for Education, and if this target is to be fulfilled then by the year of 2030, countries all across the world would need to recruit a total of 68.8 million primary school teachers as well as secondary education teachers.
